Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica Boudreaux & Hay, in Hay et al. 1967
Description: Large to medium sized species of Gephyrocapsa. Coccoliths with bridge at intermediate angle to long axis, central area almost closed, bridge low (typically almost flush with the shield).
Remarks: G. caribbeanica typically dominates Late Pleistocene asemblages from MIS8 to MIS13 or 14 (e.g. Bollmann et al. 1998, Baumann & Freitag 2004). The end of this dominance in MIS8 appears to be a more abrupt and less diachronous event than the begining. NB In some older literature the name G. caribbeanica was applied to different large Early Pleistocene Gephyrocapsa specimens, but this is inappropriate as the type specimen was from the Late Pleistocene.
Range: Late Quaternary, dominates assemblages from MIS8 to 13.
