    Genus Cryptococcolithus Gartner, 1992

    Description: Placolith coccoliths with Calcidiscus type structure but with thin proximal shield and so showing very low birefringence, with grill in central area.
    Remarks:
    Type species: Cryptococcolithus takayamae Gartner, 1992. (= subj. j. syn of C. mediaperforate Varol 1991)
    Range: Miocene - never abundant but widespread.
