Cryptococcolithus mediaperforate (Varol, 1991) de Kaenel and Villa, 1996 [Birkelundia]

Description: Elliptical, medium sized placolith. Central-area with coarse grill clearly visible in LM (non-birefringent but easily seen in phase contrast). Proximal shield is birefringent but thin, and often detached, so coccolith is characteristically dark in XPL.

Remarks: Rare and easily overlooked but a distinctive species.

Range: NN3 to 11.

Synonym: Cryptococcolithus takayamae Gartner, 1992.
